Through Our Eyes: Portraits and Self-Portraits by the students of the Clarke County School District (November 8, 2009-January 20, 2010)More than 300 works by young artists in the Clarke County School District will be on display during the Clarke County School Districts biennial art exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center.
This year's show, "Through Our Eyes: Portraits and Self-Portraits," will feature the work of students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
"Using mediums such as clay, pencil, paint and fabric, the artwork on display provides an opportunity to share our student's incredible work with the community," said Timothy Elementary art teacher, Mary Lazzari. "Every child in the district, from four to eighteen years old, can experience quality art education, which is one important feature that makes CCSD special."
Lazzari said the work celebrates not only the work done in art classes, but the connections formed across the school district. Clarke County art teachers actively collaborate with classroom and other fine arts teachers to support and enhance the Georgia Performance Standards in all areas.
"And to help in our efforts to promote and support art in our schools and the achievements of CCSD students, the First American Bank of Athens has published a book of the art work from the show," said Lazzari. "Student's statements about the art, poetry and narrative writing are included in the book."
To kick off the exhibition, an artist's reception will be held November 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lyndon House Arts Center. In addition to artwork created by students in at all grade levels, the reception will feature musical and dance performances by Clarke County School District students.
The Clarke County School District has held district-wide, biennial art exhibitions since 1983
Lamar Dodd Exhibition (September 19-October 24, 2009)Lyndon House Arts Center is proud to present Lamar Dodd: a tribute exhibition 100 years after his birth, featuring work from the collections of C.L. Morehead Jr. and Annie Laurie Dodd.
The exhibition presents a varied body of styles, from very early works to paintings from his last series.
Dodd is well known as being the creative force behind the University of Georgia Department of Art - he spearheaded its foundation in 1940, became Department Director at the age of 27, and served in that post for many years. Dodd helped create a contemporary southern art movement where none previously existed, and in 1996 the UGA art school was renamed the "Lamar Dodd School of Art".
The artistic talent of Lamar Dodd, born in Fairburn, Georgia on Sept. 22, 1909, was noticed early.
In the sixth grade he was allowed to take art lessons in LaGrange. He moved to New York in 1928, and was educated at the Art Students League there. Lamar Dodd studied both the Ashcan School and American Scene modes of painting, beginning a pattern of stylistic changes that he would follow throughout his lifetime. Dodd would never wholly abandon representational art, but the work he did for NASA in the 1960s & 1970s and the Heart Series in the 1980s are among the most abstract of his career.
Lyndon House Arts Center is very grateful for the generous assistance given by his widow, Annie Laurie Dodd, and longtime Dodd collector C.L. Morehead in mounting this exhibition.
The exhibition was seen in the upstairs South and West Galleries.

Light After Dark: Karekin and Ginger Goekjian (May 31- August 15, 2009)
A selection of work by husband-and-wife photographers Karekin & Ginger Goekjian. Their photos depict dream-like landscapes from the coastal regions of Georgia, suffused with moonlight and light from hand-held sources such as flashlights and filled with the decaying grandeur of old mansions, objects being consumed by their environments, and ghostly figures.
Karekin has photographed a series of time exposures situated on an old porch looking out onto a marsh, with traces of the silhouette or shadow of a passing cat. Ginger documented the disarray of an old greenhouse on Sapelo Island gone to seed. Another of her photos depicts an old church with its tightly shuttered windows illuminated from an uncertain source.
