Understanding ways that the places around us shape who we are and what we do is a vital aspect of being both an artist and a human being. In this course, we will look at contemporary artistic movements and individual artists whose works interact with natural places and systems in various ways—from early landscape-conscious works such as Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty to eco-art practices and hybrid scientific-artistic projects that seek to counteract environmental harm. With expanded concepts of art “products” and practices in mind, we’ll devote time to practical development of place-based creative projects, within a kind of workshop exchange.
