Dog Parks ACC Leisure Services maintains seven Dog Parks throughout the department. These are "off leash" areas where dog owners can allow their pets to run free in a fenced-in area. Dog Parks can be found at Memorial Park, Sandy Creek Park, and Southeast Clarke Park.
Memorial Park Dog ParkIn 2000, Memorial Park opened its very popular Dog Park. The 1.5 acre park is located on the hillside near the park's lake. There is no fee to use the Dog Park. Sandy Creek Park Dog Park The oldest dog parks are found at Sandy Creek Park, with the first opening in 1991 named "C. Spot Run." In fact three of the park's Dog Parks were built with donations from the Athens Kennel Club. This northside county park now boasts a total of four two to three-acre dog parks, three of which are "reservation only" with a $1.00 per hour/per dog fee. Each park has its own water source and upon reservation, each dog owner is given a key to the park and a water bowl. The fourth park is free with no reservation requirement.
"Wiggley Field" Southeast Clarke Park Dog Park (Whit Davis Road)The newest Dog Park in Leisure Services is found at Southeast Clarke Park on Whit Davis Road. Wiggley Field's unique arrangement actually features two dog parks in one. An area is designated for small dogs, while the other section is for large dogs. The two-acre Wiggley Field offers a double water fountain - a traditional size for humans and a much smaller one for canines. There is no fee to use Wiggley Field.
